“The people who were working at this for years had to convince the village that architects are good people.” – Bertrand Cadart

It’s been five years since we met Bertrand Cadart and Michael Symons on an early morning in Bicheno on Tasmania’s south east coast. Half a decade and a few hundred interviews later, this still ranks as one of our favourites.

They didn’t know it at the time, but their Surf Life Saving Club by Jack Birrell had won the Nicholas Murcutt Award – the highest honour in the National Architecture Awards category of Small Projects. When played at the 2014 Awards event for the announcement, the crowd went wild.

Fun fact – Bertrand designed the motorbikes for the first Mad Max film, and in return was given a cameo role in the opening minutes of the movie.
