Behind the Build: Austal’s Patrol Boats

“There’s a lot that goes into these boats – something like 50,000 individual objects will go into an Evolved Cape Class Patrol Boat. So the team here are managing a lot of moving pieces.” – Matt Klingberg, Sales Operations Manager, Austal Australia

This project offers a rare glimpse into the making of global shipbuilder Austal’s Evolved Cape Class patrol boats.

Filmed over two days at the Henderson shipyards near Fremantle, it captures the vessels’ complex construction, as well as the skilled design and craftsmanship that goes into every build.

Our thanks to Austal for being able to film inside the production halls, and for kindly supplying footage of some of their completed Guardian Class Patrol boats, ferries and defence vessels underway.

The Crafted with Capral Series

This project is one of the ‘Crafted with Capral’ series – an annual collection of eight videos we’ve been producing since 2022, each highlighting Australian manufacturers who use aluminium in innovative ways. From buses and trucks to playground equipment, boats, and building facades, each video offers a behind-the-scenes look at how everyday products are designed and built, and captures the creativity and expertise driving Australian manufacturing.

Videos in the series include:
Austal’s patrol vessels
Ciltech’s jetty systems
Sureweld Trailers
Incat’s world-first battery electric high speed passenger ferry
Sloanebuilt trailers
HSP Utelids
Sunlock mounting systems for commercial solar arrays
Willplay playground equipment
